Summary: An introduction to the basics of planning, designing, building and maintaining sustainable trails
Description: The BLM Recreation Program will present a one-day trails overview workshop. The target audience is trail enthusiasts and volunteers who want to learn more about the art and science of planning, designing, building and maintaining sustainable trails in the high desert and canyon country of western Colorado. The basic principles of this course are applicable to many other environments as well. We'll start in the classroom with a brief discussion of the planning parameters that guide BLM trail development. Then we'll spend more time discussing the criteria and techniques the BLM uses to assess existing trails and to design new trails that are sustainable for recreational users and for the environment.
For the second part of the workshop we'll head to nearby BLM public lands to take a look at some actual trails. This is the walk and talk portion of the course where we'll see illustrations and demonstrations of the principles discussed in the classroom.
Those trail enthusiasts wishing to take on a leadership role for trail projects should consider taking a Crew Leadership for Trails course where group leadership skills are integrated with the sustainable trail principles and techniques. This course will be offered in Grand Junction the weekend of April 4-5 and is also available in other locations around Colorado.
