Summary: This half-day seminar will focus on legal issues and risk management when working with volunteers on outdoor stewardship projects.
Description: Presenter:Catherine Hansen-Stamp is a practicing attorney in Golden, Colorado. She advises recreation, adventure and sport program providers and related organizations on law, liability and risk management issues. Cathy speaks and writes frequently on these issues, both regionally and nationally. She co-authors regularly for ACA's Campline and Outdoored.com's Adventure and Recreation Law Center online publications. Cathy graduated from The Colorado College in 1981 and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming in 1985. She is a member of both the Wyoming and Colorado Bar Associations.
Session Description: Do you use volunteers in leading, guiding or assisting with your programs? In this interactive session, Cathy will discuss legal and risk management issues important to understand in your use of these volunteers as you endeavor to run a quality operation. What is a volunteer? How is a volunteer different than an employee? How do volunteer and/or governmental "immunity" laws impact the volunteer's and the organization's liability? Will the volunteer be held to the same 'standard' of care as those employed in the industry teaching or leading similar activities? What is the organization's legal exposure in the event the volunteer, or a participant or third party is injured? In addition to discussing these and other issues, Cathy will engage the audience in an interactive exercise focused on recent legal cases involving liability associated with the use of volunteers.
