Start Date-End Date: 06/08/2012-06/08/2012 Land Manager Office: South Suburban Parks and Recreation District Land Manager Contact: Skot Latona Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Weed Warrior & Native Garden Description: As Weed Warriors, you and your team will learn to identify common state-listed noxious weeds, how to outsmart them, and an easy weed removal technique that doesn't require you to be on your hands and knees pulling or digging weeds. The team will have practice identifying and removing weeds in the park. Also during this project day, the team will learn about native plants in the park's demonstration garden while helping out with its maintenance. This project is adaptable for all ages and abilities. You'll be able to work and learn as a team. At the end of the project, each person will have gained knowledge on native and invasive plants that they can take to their own backyards or on hikes with their family and friends. One volunteer might have felt that this project was too easy and not physically challenging enough. Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Adding a VOC supported lunch with specific menu requests (Udi's) from every participant created extra work on this project. VOC came out approximately even in charges and expenses for lunch to the SWAT. Description of Accidents/Incidents: None Description of Work Completed: 12 volunteers from Welborn, Sullivan, Meck & Tooley, P.C. They cleared noxious weeds such as mullein, scotch thistle, and diffused knapweed on about half mile of the South Platte River floodplains. These weed warriors also cleared most of the weeds in the demonstration native garden at the Carson Nature Center so that visitor can clearly see the native wildflowers. They learned about noxious weed removal techniques so that they can be weed warriors in their own backyards! The volunteers enjoyed numerous wildlife sightings which included a bullsnake, toad, pelicans, and nesting house wren.
