Summary: Learn basic sawing tasks and safety on this exciting training opportunity!
Description:
The focus of the training will be on sawing safety, basic bucking and limbing, felling principles and techniques, an overview of the tools of the trade (crosscuts, axes, plumb-bobs, wedges, etc.), tool care and maintenance, hazard analysis and situational awareness, and did we mention safety?
Certification will be a recommendation that must be approved by each local agency or land manager where work with saws will be performed. In Forest Service language, we will be focusing on training and certifying sawyers at the "A" and "B" Sawyer level for bucking, and limbing activities. Felling techniques will be covered in the classroom session, but because the emphasis is on clearing trails, felling with a crosscut will be limited. Those that demonstrate the ability to safely and confidently handle intermediate sawing situations utilizing approved Forest Service procedures may be certified at the "B Sawyer" level. We will cover just what "A Sawyer" and "B Sawyer" levels are at the training.
We hope to get everyone evaluated and certified, but this will depend on the number of participants and the number of qualified certifiers available to help. We may have to arrange a second certification session if we can't get everyone certified Sunday.
All participants must have a valid basic First Aid and CPR for the certification or recommendation to be given.
Camping will be available beginning the afternoon of 5/2 through the evening of 5/4. Light breakfast and coffee will be provided 5/3-5/4. Participants are responsible for their own lunch and dinners throughout the training. There will be potable water available throughout the training. There are local restaurants and a general store in Del Norte.
