Project Summary: On Saturday, August 15th, 12 employees from EKS&H came out to St. Vrain State Park to help construct a new crusher fine trail. The group had to dig a 3-in trench for the crusher fines, and then fill in. They were able to complete 200 feet of new trail, and dig another 115 feet of trench for the next group to fill in.
Successes and Challenges: It was a HOT day, and there is no shade at St. Vrain. The high was 100 degrees, and volunteers couldn't drink enough water to keep up with how much they were sweating. The morning was better, but after lunch it was pretty brutal. We ended at 1:15 PM due to heat.
Lessons Learned: Originally, EKS&H said they were going to bring 80 people out on this project. That didn't happen, and they brought 12. Making realistic volunteer goals in the future is advised--luckily the land manager didn't know they wanted to bring 80, so his expectations on work getting done was much lower.
Special Notes:
Stewardship Education: Park Manager Ben Pedrett talked about the history of St. Vrain, and the purpose and long-term vision of this project.
