Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE
Beautiful scenery, panoramic views, and home to where the buffalo roam (and deer and antelope play...) make Genesee Mountain Park a popular Front Range attraction, just 30 minutes from downtown Denver. It is the oldest and largest park in the Denver Mountain Parks system, and includes 46 mountain parks and more than 14,000 acres of parklands in the mountainsand foothills of Jefferson, Clear Creek, Douglas, and Grand counties in Colorado.
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK
Volunteers return to Genesee Mountain Park, in which its bison herd is undoubtedly its biggest draw,to play an important role in constructing a new trail. This new trail will connect the northeastern portion of the park to the Chief Hosa side, which will give visitors access to a scenic loop that covers almost the entire 2,000 acres in the park. Volunteers will build a natural surface trail in an area that will enhance the visitor experience, improve safety, and increase the variety of recreational activities in the area.

Project Summary: On July 23rd, 26 volunteers and 4 members of the staff, worked on maintaining and restoring some of the new trails (Summit Trail and Genesee Mountain Trail) at Genesee Park. The volunteers were able to improve 1100 feet of trail by leveling the tread and widening the trail in some areas. They also did extensive rock work and built a 35 foot rock monowall, 15 foot rock turnpike and 5 rock checks (around 30 feet along the trail). The volunteers also put in 3 water drainages to help with erosion on the new trail.
Successes and Challenges: Even though we had a lot of rock work throughout the day, the volunteers were eager to work and did a great job maintaining energy throughout the day. The crew leaders did a great job motivating and teaching the volunteers how to do some of the more technical work.

Special Notes:
Stewardship Education: Max Bader of Denver Mountain Parks explained to the volunteers in the morning the purpose of improving/maintaining the new trails at Genesee Park and explained how the park is moving from a "drive-thru" park, to a more hiking/biking-friendly park.
