Almost 30 volunteers from Lockheed Martin, The Mission Continues, & Give an Hour, were on hand to enjoy the beautiful Colorado Fall weather. Once the day go underway, we seperated into 3 different groups of 10 people each to tackle trail maintenance in different sections of the park. The focus of each group was to do do basic corridor clearing and trail maintenance where needed. Since the day was a short one, scheduled to end at 12:30PM, the sections hiked were only about 1 mile in length. This proved to be just about perfect for the groups, and for the weather. At the end of the day, people from all of the organizations represented were able to say thank you and express interest in working together again someday. Successes and Challenges: Successes: The continued collaboration between VOC and CO State Parks. Working with new groups that will hopefully grow into long lasting working relationships. Challenges: Short work days. Lessons Learned: Always remember to take the half and half out of the projec box at the end of the project:) Special Notes: Cheyenne Mountain is a pretty place to work - camping is available. Jason Hagan offered a free spot for me to camp the night before the project. Stewardship Education: Able to talk about the affect of invasive plants on disturbed areas and how this relates to building sustainable trails in all of the parks. There were great opportunities to talk about trail erosion and proper techiniques for trail maintenance. Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Comment from Volunteer regarding the mornign start to the workday. He thought that the morning talks were too long, he was eager to get to work.
