Evans Outdoor Lab. Through classroom, role playing and field work sessions, Trainees practiced the skills necessary to lead other volunteers on VOC projects. We're excited for this new group of trainees to get started on projects this year! Successes and Challenges: Overall, a pretty good reboot of the VOC CL training. Using the OSI curriculum melded with VOC institutional info. Steve West has done an especially good job melding past with present in regards to this training. We should focus on finding more instructors to participate in this. Lessons Learned: Crew Leader Role Playing during field session (Day 2): This seems to be generally well received, though some folks prefer a more technical focus. If we're going to do this make sure it's consistently applied in all the groups and that everyone gets a chance to play leader. Breaking up the classroom time: This is starting to become consistent feedback from OSI trainings as well. I think the added role playing around Assessing your Crew was a nice touch to help relieve a little of the classroom monotony that sets in over a full day. I'd like to explore additional options ahead of the July session, (providing content ahead of time, making time for trail walk and talk on day 1, having a mix of indoor/outdoor both days etc.) that would help get people up and out of their chairs. Course Organization (Synching between manual and presentation): A couple folks brought this up. Some frustration with the order of info presented in the manual being different than the standard outline/agenda for the OSI modules. Not much we can do about it now, but will be reorganized in the next edition of the OSI manual. VOC CL Dropbox: I'll link you guys into this when I send it to the rest of the group. Please let me know anything else you want to add to it once you've had a chance to check it out. Glenn and Steve A. also wanted the opportunity to provide some feedback on the trainees in their groups, and I'd be glad to have this on file so we can share with mentors, CLMs and staff going forward. I've broken out the field groups here. From your groups, let me know strengths/weakness, who's most ready to be a CL and who needs more time and/or attention as you see it. Also, let me know if you need help remembering who's who. Steve A.
