Summary: Xcel employees will come out to Genesee Park to help with important wildfire mitigation.
Description: Genesee Park is one of the premier properties of the Denver Mountain Parks system. Located just a few miles up I-70, the park offers sweeping views of the Front Range and is also home to a bison herd. On the project, volunteers will help with 'wildfire mitigation', a term used to describe any action taken to reduce or eliminate the destructive impacts of wildfires. Specific tasks will include sawing down and stacking small trees that often serve as fuel for wildfires, as well as hinder larger trees from growing strong and healthy.

Project Summary: On Saturday, Sept. 10th, 54 Xcel Energy employees and customers came out Genesee Mountain Park to help with a forestry managment project. Volunteers arrived in the morning, ate breakfast and got to work! Armed with hand saws and loppers, the volunteers set out to thin 9 acres of forest. They carried bigger logs and trees down a steep slope to the road, where they will be hauled away to be chipped, and made into mulch. The smaller trees were scattered, or made into wildlife piles, that will serve as nesting and refuge areas for small woodland creatures. The group worked hard, and had fun all in beautiful weather!
Successes and Challenges: The slope was pretty steep, but the volunteers were safe, and conscientious of this. The other challenge was the social media challenge that Xcel was pushing for in their Day of Service. We pitched to the volunteers twice about posting for the project.

Special Notes:
Stewardship Education: Provided by VOC staff and Denver Mountain Parks Ranger Ryan, who talked about the need for forestry thinning and the wildlife piles we built.
