Summary: Collect native plants on this beginner- and youth-friendly project.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
A key northern tributary of the South Platte River, the St. Vrain flows from the foothills of Boulder County to just outside of Longmont, where it meets with the Platte. TheSt. Vrain is an important part of northern Colorado ecosystems and the project will take place alongascenic stretch of the river near Lyons, CO.
About the Volunteer Experience:
Volunteers will focus on harvesting willow transplants known as "stakes" and may also harvest seed or other plant material. These materials will then be transplanted for critical restoration projects at other locations.
About the Overall Impact:
Using native plant materials is fundamental to ecological restoration efforts. However, these materials can have limited to no commercial availability. This means that oftentimes, the only way to procure them is to harvest willow stakes and other materials from the areas where they naturally occur. Volunteer efforts on this project will help facilitate other important restoration work along the St. Vrain Watershed.Final Location details will be made availble within two weeks of the project date.

Project Summary: X adults and X youth volunteers spent the morning of Sep. 16th Harvesting Coyote Willows near St. Vrain Creek in Lyons. The group had a productive day, collecting 1450 Willow "stakes" that will be planted in future stream restoration projects along the St. Vrain Watershed.Willows are a key riparian plant species, and are especially helpful in revegetating an stabil;izing damged stream banks.
Thanks to AloTerra Restoration Services, St. Vrain Creek Colation and the Cemex Lyons plant for their support in making the project possible.
Successes and Challenges: Great project day with happy volunteers. Unfortunately, the full river planting that we hoped for did not materialze in time for this project, but we were still able to pull together a meaningful restroation event.
Lessons Learned: Plant materials harvests may be touch and go events in terms of finallizing locations.
