Summary: Volunteers will level the trail surface where water runoff has created ruts and will add water erosion barriers such as water bars to prevent future damage. This work will greatly improve the safety and user experience of the people using this area of the park for recreation activities.
Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE
Located just fifteen miles from downtown Denver, Cherry Creek State Park offers a natural prairie environment nestled around an 880 acre reservoir. The park is a popular destination for outdoor recreationists, nature lovers and those wanting to quickly get away from the hustle of the city. The park offers complete outdoor recreation facilities, including camping, picnicking and facilities for group events.
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE AND IMPACT
Cherry Creek State Park is looking to restore a few short, natural surface trails that lead to the reservoir which were heavily eroded during the 2013 floods. Volunteers will level the trail surface where water runoff has created ruts and will add water erosion barriers such as water bars to prevent future damage. This work will greatly improve the safety and user experience of the people using this area of the park for recreation activities.

Project Summary: The project consisted of a 45 minute press conference and a roughly 1 hour project, followed by a BBQ for the volunteers. Dave and Claudia from Cherry Creek State Park were great to work with and went above and beyond to help get everything set up. Dave and 2 other employees crew lead for the project so the work load on VOC's end wasn't too heavy.
Ann and Kellie arrived in the morning for the press conference and after that we didn't expect too many volunteers to stick around, guessing we would get about 10-15. We were surprised by the turn out and ended up with about 30 volunteers! The group consisted of LNT folks, COT employees and 5 Adobe employees as well as CPW. We asked Scott from Adobe to send along some volunteers to ensure we had a decent turn out to get the work done, and the employee were happy to be there and ready to work. They didn't however seem to be aware of the press conference and the unusual schedule we had for this one.
With the 30 volunteers we were able to knock out the work just in time for lunch, 1000 ft of crusher and 5 waterbars. The volunteers then enjoyed a nice BBQ put on by Jason the park manager. Overall, the project was a success but due to the nature of this "project" some aspects were a bit last minute.
Successes and Challenges: Successes;
Got all the work done
Great BBQ
Fun group to work with
Challenges;
Most people didn't register, so it was difficult to anticipate what project day would look like
