Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/24/2018-07/24/2018 Land Manager Office: CPW - Roxborough State Park Land Manager Contact: Joseph Herrmann Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Trail maintenance on the recently constructed Overlook Trail at Roxborough State Park Description: About the Stewardship Site: Roxborough State Park carries the esteemed designation of a Colorado Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark for good reason. The 4,000-acre park, nestled against the foothills south of Littleton, is comprised of stunning red rock formations, unique plant communities and a wide range of wildlife. The approximately 100,000 annual visitors can take in all of Roxborough's beauty from a variety of different access trails. About the Volunteer Experience: Volunteers will do some touch up maintenance on a newly built trail in Roxborough State Park. Volunteers will primarily focus on completing the final touches to 1/4 mile of new trail that was build by VOC's high school leadership group, Cairn, in May. This project is perfect for all levels of fitness and abilities, and its convenient Front Range location makes for a quiet escape from the sounds of the city. Breakfast will be provided. About the Overall Impact: The construction of this trail will provide access to a scenic viewing area that is currently inaccessible. Further, the specific section of trail will eventually serve as an access point to a larger route, which will eventually create a loop for users to enjoy expansive views of the park and the Front Range. As the numbers of people to the park continue to increase, the need for more miles of trail in the further reaches of the park will be imperative to help keep the park a pristine hiking destination. While we did not get as far as I thought we would, the volunteers from the ERC had great energy and were a joy to work with. They arrived about 30 minutes before they said they would (blessing and a curse) and they were energetic about hiking about 10 minutes up the road to the work site. Successes and Challenges: Successes: While it would have been nice to be there earlier, the energy at registration was great and people were super happy to be at Roxborough on a fairly cool, beautiful morning. We did not get too far on the trail, but we were able to expand the trail to be about 4 feet wide and the volunteers were very excited to be working on a trail to improve accessibility for those in wheel chairs. Challenges: Brian was about 20 minutes later than he said he would be, but fortunately, we had the code from Joe so it wasn't too big of a deal. When I (Delaney) arrived, David and a volunteer were waiting at the gate that Brian had just opened, so it made setting up a bit more stressful for Taylor. It would have been nice to have a crew leader on this project because I did not know how to answer some questions about trail construction and Taylor and my groups had two different techniques. There were also some indirect complaints about having warm water, so maybe bringing ice on a hot day like today would have been nice. Lessons Learned: In the future, I would have ordered coffee 30 minutes earlier to ensure that set up would be complete before the volunteers got there. The volunteers kept working on the downslope of the trail, causing dirt to go beyond the 4-foot width of the trail and making us have to work backward to clean up the trail. Stressing the creating the piles in the center of the trail would have been helpful for this. Can we bring ice in the future?
