He was happy with whatever the groups could accomplish in a day. Altogether, about 60 feet of crusher fine was laid out and about 20 feet of new trail was created for crusher fine to be laid out at a later time. The type of work was perfect for the group that we had, completing work that was pretty straight forward. Overall the work went well and they completed quite a bit of work considering the heat. I think most were ready to work more, while others were very tired by the time we stopped for lunch. Having two groups show up at two different times was very strange and threw off the morning a bit. We had only a few people show up at 8AM, Jason from Chatfield had suggested that we get go through a tool talk and they can help explain tools to others as they arrive. I thought that we would wait for more people to arrive after the tool talk, but Jason had sent them out on the trail to get started. The first group started at least a half hour before the second group did. No group introduction was made that day, or any overview of the site or scope of work. the second group didn't arrive until 8:45/9AM. Two people were experiencing heat exhaustion. I had no idea that these people were experiencing symptoms until one Chatfield Ranger told me he was taking someone back to the truck, and that another girl was already int the truck. The second ranger was with her and had provided her with some gatorade. With folks having heat exhaustion symptoms and some people getting tired, we end work a little earlier than anticipated (about a half hour). Ed had mentioned that his chef would be at the parking lot at 12 and have lunch ready by 12:30. We get back to the parking lot and his chef hadn't arrived yet, so I decided to do the ice break that was originally planned for the morning at that time, along with some trivia. As I am reading through the trivia card I state "That's interesting, I didn't know that." and one volunteer named Julio that had been giving me a hard time the whole morning says,You don't seem to know the answer to a lot of things today!" Ed, was there and I assumed heard the comment he made, but didn't say anything to him about it. The whole volunteer group had a collective "ooh" moment and egged me on to give a witty comeback. I looked at him for a few seconds, and said it's not worth it, and went on with trivia. I couldn't say if this is how this volunteer acts normally amongst groups, or if he has an issue with female leadership, but it was rude and disrespectful. Successes and Challenges: Successes Connected a small portion of trail back to the crusher fine piles on the north end of the trail Created about 20 more feet of new tread that the crusher fine would be placed on top of Maintained the south most end of the trail and the middle section of the trail, adding more crusher fine to make it more sustainable. Got a contact for a potential new crew chef Challenges getting started in the morning. We essentially had two tool talks and had one crew begin work about 35 min earlier than the other group. Jason and I agreed that we could talk about tools while we wait for more people to arrive, but he sent them on the trail to get started One volunteer named Julio was giving people a hard time part, including myself. He made a comment in front of the whole group "You don't seem to know the answer to a lot of things today!" He wasn't giving the men of the group nearly as much rebuttal or questioning them. Stopping work a little early because it was so hot, and having a little bit of lull time before lunch Volunteers going to Ed (Mission Continues) and Jason for answers instead of reaching out to me for questions Lessons Learned: Make sure parties have a clear understanding of the start time. After sending the project schedule with a start time of 8AM, the majority of people did not show up until 9. Ed from Mission Continues had posted on their website that the project starts at 9AM and ends at 3PM instead of 8AM- 1PM. Make sure folks know exactly what staff is there to help them out as well as their roles. Try to get as much of an accurate count of people who are coming beforehand. Many volunteers did not register online through VOC for Mission Continues, and we had a good turn out for numbers on their end. A handful of people registered online through VOC from Lockheed Martin, and only three volunteers showed from Lockheed. Bring more water! or have a Chatfield staff go and refill at one point Special Notes: Lockheed has donated and helped support the Audubon Center and the Discovery Pavilion for years, the volunteers that did participate are continuing a tradition with the company. The Mission Continues is a non profit of veterans and active duty soldiers that give back to their community in a variety of different aspects. Not only are they providing a service through the military, but they also take a closer look into their communities to give back and provide. Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Description of Accidents/Incidents: Two volunteers were experiencing heat exhaustion on the trail. The two volunteers hopped in one of the Chatfiled Ranger trucks to have some air conditioning to cool down. One of the rangers had given them some Gatorade to help them re-hydrate.
