He made plans at multipule campsites to reconstruct or construct timber box steps on any slopes that needed stabilization or proved unsafe as the basically acted like ramps with marbles on them. With the Otten Johnson SWAT, we were able to construct 7 timber box steps. Eric was very happy with the amount of work we got done in a short amount of time. He has two weeks of youth corps out at the park in October where he will complete the work. Successes and Challenges: success: exceeded land managers expectations challenges: it was a long drive for such a short volunteer day. We may want to reconsider next year if they have their retreat in Steamboat again. Would push to have a full day Lessons Learned: We had a really receptive group and I love building timber box steps! I think I was able to teach the skill thoroughly and they were able to take ownership over the project since they knew each step. Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Lots of travel for a short project. I was in the car longer than the project lasted. That being said, Eric was very satisfied with the amount of work done, the volunteers enjoyed themselves and I had a blast. Just something to keep in mind for next year.
