Description

Start Date-End Date: 09/27/2019-09/27/2019 Land Manager Office: CPW - Roxborough State Park Land Manager Contact: Joseph Herman Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Ambient/Pivot SWAT at Roxborough State Park Description: Where You'll Be: Roxborough State Park carries the esteemed designation of a Colorado Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark for good reason. The 4,000-acre park, nestled against the foothills south of Littleton, is comprised of stunning red rock formations, unique plant communities and a wide range of wildlife. The approximately 100,000 annual visitors can take in all of Roxborough's beauty from a variety of different access trails. What You'll Do: Volunteers will help widen the existing Lyons Overlook Trail and clear the new trail corridor. Work will include cutting new tread to widen the trail and cutting back any encroaching vegetation. Why It Matters: This highly trafficked trail will continue to degrade without some much needed maintenance. Volunteers from Pivot and Ambient will play a critical part in getting the Lyons Overlook Trail back up to sustainable trail standards and allow others to enjoy it for years to come. The crews spent the morning maintaining and reworking the tread to allow for positive drainage, and widening the trail as well. In addition to helping to mitigate erosion, this work will make the trail accessible to track chairs, providing for adaptive recreation opportunities and enhancing the accessibility of the park to persons with disabilities. Successes and Challenges: Overall excellent day with solid support from park staff. Tiffany is especially great to work with. Lessons Learned: See "key concerns" Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Concern from Dan: I'm concerned with how Roxborough may be choosing to manage the park's trails. The Lyons Overlook trail was a good example of a trail that can successfully be reworked to accommodate track chair access. However, I'm not sure that every park in the trail should/could be reworked in such a way without causing significant long term resource issues via erosion. I also was told that the park wants to remove all the log steps on the trails. Again, while there are some places that this could be done effectively from a user and resource perspective, I have concerns with other trails (carpenter peak especially) where this would be an overall resource detriment, even if it allows for expanded access. Not to mention, countless numbers of these steps were installed by VOC volunteers since 2013. Finally, the park is looking at new trails and reroutes to accommodate use and connect to the newer trails on the SW end. However, some of what staff told me about how they may choose to go about doing this has me wondering if they have the appropriate skill level.
