Summary: This one-day course will teach volunteers the basics needed to perform basic trail maintenance independently or in small groups and is appropriate for anyone performing basic trail maintenance in an adopt or other setting.
Description: This training is being provided via a partnership between the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado's Outdoor Stewardship Institute!
With online, classroom, and field-based components, this one-day training will teach you the skills you need to take care of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail independently or in small groups. You'll learn and practice topics related to trail tread and corridor maintenance, maintaining and constructing drainage features such as knicks and dips, as well as effectively working with agency partners, risk management, tool safety and effective accomplishment reporting.
Thanks to a partnership with Colorado Mountain College, this course will feature an online component prior to the workshop in order to maximize efficiency and on-the-ground coursework, making it easier and faster for volunteers, students, and professionals to obtain the skills necessary to effectively care for Colorado's natural resources.

About Outdoor Stewardship Institute (OSI)
Originally created in collaboration with other organizations, OSI offers affordable, in-depth training courses for volunteers and employees from any organization to learn or improve their stewardship skills and prepare for a variety of leadership roles. Approximately 300 people each year receive OSI training in topics such as volunteer crew leadership; trail design, construction, and maintenance; ecological, habitat, and fire restoration; crosscut saw skills and more. OSI is a program of Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Additional Information: This workshop requires that trainees complete online coursework before attending the in-person training session. OSI hosts online training in partnership with Colorado Mountain College. To access the online course content,go to this link. Fill out the form, selecting Independent Stewardship for Trails from the first drop down menu at the bottom of the form. DO NOT SELECT ANY OTHER COURSE OPTIONS!
You should receive an auto-response indicating you have successfully registered for the online course within a few hours and will receive access to the course within 2 business days.
The online work is self paced, takes 3-4 hours to finish and must be completed before attending the in person session of the training. In order for the information to be fresh upon attending the in person session, it's recommended that trainees not start the online work until 3 weeks out from their field training date.
