Project Summary: Fifty volunteers came to Green Mountain to work on a heavily used trail for the 2019 Xcel day of service. The event was just 3 hours long, and with orientation and a 10 minute hike in and out, it was over almost before it began. But volunteers were enthusiastic and motivated and successfully completed the primary objective of rerouting a 300 ft. section of fall line trail and constructing 3 climbing turns and also cleaning up several machine-cut drainage structures.
Five experienced VOC crew leaders came out to lead, and the City of Lakewood had 2 staff on site, both of whom were very knowledgeable and supportive.
The project selected by Park Supervisor Drew Sprafke was ideal for the amount of time available and the difficulty of work desired by Xcel counterparts.
Successes and Challenges: The only issue was the size of the parking lot and the popularity of this trailhead. While there was a sign posted in the lot, there were still a constant stream of park users looking to park and hike the trail. Work was halted at least a dozen times while hikers and mountain bikers passed through the work site. This was problematic in the beginning, but at the end it was satisfying for volunteers to see users already enjoying the trail they just constructed.
Lessons Learned:
Special Notes: Xcel has worked this site with VOC for the last 2 years. It would be beneficial to find a new site for them for their 2020 DOS.
