Where You'll Be:
Roxborough State Park carries the esteemed designation of a Colorado Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark for good reason. The 4,000-acre park, nestled against the foothills south of Littleton, is comprised of stunning red rock formations, unique plant communities and a wide range of wildlife. The approximately 100,000 annual visitors can take in all of Roxborough's beauty from a variety of different access trails.
What You'll Do:
The park is currently working on constructing a new trail, the Bear Canyon Trail. Work would consist mostly of digging in new trail and corridor clearing. These tasks provide a range of difficulty levels, so there will be something for everyone!
Why it Matters: With increased use in parks, new access is important in order to keep trails in good shape. Also new trails provide new experiences for users which everyone loves!

Project Summary: Credit Union of Colorado joined VOC for a morning of trail building out at Roxborough State Park. Volunteers arrived at 8 am for check-in. The morning talk occurred at around 8:15, and after we hiked the 1/2 mile up to the new Bear Canyon trail. The project tool manger drove the tools through Roxborough park neighborhood to delivery the cache only 500 feet from the worksite. Once we arrived on site, volunteers were given a tool safety talk and showed a quick demonstration on how to build trail. From there, crews were sent off to clear vegetation and rough-in tread. The weather was sunny, but not overly hot and so crews were able to work fairly continuously. We were able to rough in between 150-200 feet of trail at a 5 ft width. Work was finished at 12:15 and crews hiked back down to their vehicles.
Successes and Challenges: Success: Volunteers were given a good basis of knowledge on trails and trail building, they all came away feeling like they learned something.
Challenges: CPW staff was suppose to be out with us that day, but they did not show up on site. There were a few minor questions volunteers had about the site that VOC Staff could not answer. We were working in an area that was heavily infested with poison ivy and poison hemlock.
Lessons Learned: Driving the tools around takes approximately the same amount of time as hiking the 1/2 mile to the site.
