Summary: Spend a day working with the Outdoor Stewardship Institute and trainees from the Four Corners area to improve your trail skills. This training is free to individuals from the Four Corners area!
Description: Open to volunteers and employees from any organization.
Sharpen your trail skills during this weekend training! In this Saturday and Sunday workshop, you'll have the opportunity to learn from the best in the trail-building business, including OSI Instructors who have been building and maintaining trails for decades.
This skills training will explore several basic concepts of sustainable trail maintenance and appropriate applications for multiple use trails, including drainage structures. We will also go over the basics of rock work and practice building commonly used structures. Trainees will come away with an enhanced ability to assess trails for practical maintenance solutions.
Camping will be provided. Trainees will need to bring their own food as none will be provided.
Cost: $60 or FREE to trainees who reside in and/or are affiliated with groups in the Four Corners area.Contact Ben Kromash at ben@voc.org to sign up at no cost if you meet this condition.
About Outdoor Stewardship Institute (OSI)
Originally created in collaboration with other organizations, OSI offers affordable, in-depth training courses for volunteers and employees from any organization to learn or improve their stewardship skills and prepare for a variety of leadership roles. Approximately 300 people each year receive OSI training in topics such as volunteer crew leadership; trail design, construction, and maintenance; ecological, habitat, and fire restoration; crosscut saw skills and more. OSI is a program of Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Additional Information: Trainees are invited (but not required) to access OSI online training content prior to the workshop session, including:
Trails Overview: You will work through three online sections covering an overview of how trails are planned and managed for sustainability and the basics of trail construction and maintenance. The course takes 2-3 hours to complete and includes text and diagrams, recorded lecture content, video examples of topics, and quizzes.
Rock Skills Overview:You will work through three online sections covering the fundamentals of safely selecting, transporting, and setting rock as well as overviews of the components and process of constructing rock steps and rock walls. The course takes 2-3 hours to complete and includes text and diagrams, recorded lecture content, video examples of topics, and quizzes.
