Summary: Join employees of Vivax Pros to plant trees at the Cal-Wood Education Center.
Description: Where You'll Be:
Cal-Wood Education Center provides environmental education to thousands of youth and families each year through summer camps, school programs, and family camps. Located less than 20 miles west of Boulder in Jamestown, Cal-Wood's 1,200- acre outdoor classroom features pristine Ponderosa Pine forest, diverse wildlife and plants, nine miles of trails, meadows, peaks, ponds, streams, a waterfall, a 1901 homestead, a once-active mica mine, camping areas, cabins, and a lodge. Cal-wood has provided outdoor and environmental educational experiences on site to hundreds of thousands of Coloradans with an annual reach of more than 4000 individuals.
What You'll Do:
Join up to 60 volunteers, including employees from Vivax Pros, to plant trees to help with fire restoration efforts. Once on site, volunteers will have the option to join one of three crews according to difficulty level; all crews will be planting trees, but the terrain will be different.
EASY CREW: low burn severity areas (less tree damage), flatter slopes, grassy areas, short hikes
MODERATE CREW:medium/high burn severity areas (75% tree mortality), medium slopes, rocky slopes, longer hikes to get to sites
DIFFICULT CREW:high burn severity areas (100% tree mortality), steeper slopes, rocky slopes, uneven terrain, longer hikes to get to sites up stepper terrain
Please note this project was originally scheduled as a Corporate SWAT (Stewardship with a Team) project for Vivax Pros. However, it had to be rescheduled due to the late May snowstorm. This project is now open to the public to ensure we have enough volunteers to complete the work. It just might look a little different from your typical VOC project!
Why It Matters:
On October 17, 2020, the Cal-Wood Fire burned more than half of Cal-Wood's 1,200 acre beautiful mountain top. There is 100% tree mortality in many areas, and, even where there is some survival, the land has been changed forever. Restoration work is a high priority, but the process is going to take years and millions of dollars. Volunteer efforts will be an integral part of making this process possible. Cal-Wood has partnered with many different organizations such as Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado to organize volunteer events for everything from planting new trees to fixing hay bales and seeding grass to reduce erosion.
