Summary: On this Friday project, you will help plant vegetable gardens that will be harvested and donated to local residents in need in the fall. Volunteer work will be fun and easy!
Volunteers should bring a refillable water bottle, sun protection, and appropriate layered clothing.
Description: The vegetables that volunteers plant will be harvested throughout the growing season and donated to local food banks, homeless shelters, and families in need. This partnership with Grow Local Colorado creates a more connected community; demonstrates the beauty and efficacy of edible gardens; inspires residents to plant their own vegetable gardens; and contributes to a more sustainable food chain by reducing our carbon footprint.

Project Summary: On Friday, June 2nd, volunteers from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) met at Civic Center Park to help Grow Local Colorado plant seeds and seedlings for the 2023 growing season. AAAE volunteers were in Denver for the weekend for a professional conference. Grow Local had three staff each leading small crews of volunteers (~10) at two gardens each. The AAAE coordinator ordered boxed lunches for all volunteers and shared the lunches with Grow Local and VOC staff.
Successes and Challenges: Successes: All 6 gardens were successfully planted by volunteers and volunteers expressed many positive comments about how nice it was to be doing something outdoors together, and how this event was a nice change-up from their usual volunteering at places like Habitat for Humanity. They mixed and mingled with one another and worked effectively as a group.
Challenges: One AAAE volunteer felt sick from the altitude (she was visiting from sea level) and although, I directed her to drink lots of water, have lots of snacks, sit in the shade, and to take ibuprofen, sheended up going back to the hotel a bit earlyto rest. It was also challenging to be working in the heat of the day (10-2pm). It was difficult to refill water, as the closest refill area was inside the courthouse and not very easy to use since it was a water foundation and a good distance away from the worksite. Eventually, I asked a DPR employee who happened to be on site if there was a closer place to fill drinking water jugs, and he was able to help, but the area he led me to was still a considerable walk and not open to the public (he had keys).
Lessons Learned: - Bring extra water so that you don't need to refill water jugs
- Warn volunteers about avoiding coffee and alcohol if they are coming from lower elevation to Denver for the first time in order to prevent altitude sickness
- Bring extra trash, compost, and recycling bags (and set containers up) ahead of when lunch arrives
