Summary: Join VOC and the renowned Parker McMullen Bushman for this leadership training focusing on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the outdoors. This training is open to all and will address implicit bias, privilege, and microaggression, focusing on how these concepts apply to leadership roles in outdoor stewardship.
Description: Interested in expanding your leadership capabilities with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado? This online training is a great place to start!
Provided in partnership with Parker McMullen Bushman of Inclusive Journeys, this training will provide attendees the opportunity to assess their own emotional, mental and physical status, along with identifying some of our own implicit biases which may impact how we assess, lead, or teach our crews.
Instructors will guide trainees through several activities and discussions on how to assess yourself as a leader and will provide you with the tools to address these matters as they arise in "on the trail" scenarios.
Assessing Yourself as a Leader- Implicit Bias, Part 1
It can be difficult to identify our own implicit biases, or even to admit that we have them. But research has shown thateveryone has implicit biases. This does not mean, however, that everyone has thesameimplicit biases, or that it's impossible to change one's implicit biases. Research into "debiasing" is still in its early stages, but so far, results suggest that changing or eliminating one's implicit biases requires time, intention, and training.
Understanding Privilege & Microaggressions,Part 2
Microaggressions are subtle verbal and non-verbal slights based on social group membership. Microaggressions are often the result of unconscious biases that lead to unintended discrimination against or degradation of those who are socially marginalized in a society, whether for skin color, gender, sexual orientation, age, language, origin, religion, disability, or any other characteristic. Raising our awareness of systems and bias allows us to rethink the ways in which we approach hiring, inclusion, organizational culture and relationships with stakeholders. The session provides an understanding of how privilege and bias work and ways we can disrupt microaggression patterns and have tough conversations.
After completing this training, you will be able to:
Defineimplicit bias, privilege, andmicroaggressionand give examples of these concepts in action.
Identify and express examples of privilege in your lives or the community in which you live.
Describehow implicit biases are formed and the ways in which they impact the lives of those who are affected by them.
Examineyour own biases and their effects on yourself and others.
This training is free and open to all, however registration prior to the event is mandatory.
