Where You’ll Be:
Axton Ranch is the newest addition to the Denver Mountain Parks system, and the first since 1939. This 450-acre open space spans Gilpin and Jefferson counties, just south of Boulder County. The property features diverse landscapes, including meadows, old-growth forests, a creek, and a historic trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. While Axton Ranch is not yet fully developed with trails and amenities, it is being prepared to host recreational and educational programs in the future—with the help of volunteers like you.
The land, operated as a cattle ranch by the Axton family since 1954, was donated to the city of Denver after four generations of operating the land as a cattle ranch.
What You’ll Do:
Join us for a Saturday project to perform essential trail maintenance tasks. Open to volunteers ages 16+, the work will include a variety of tasks ranging from easy to challenging, providing an excellent opportunity to explore this new Denver Mountain Park while contributing to its development. While the focus will be on trail maintenance, there may also be some light trail construction involved.
Please bring your own lunch for the day!
Why It Matters:
This project will provide new, sustainable recreation opportunities near Denver. Volunteers will have the opportunity to ensure the trails are constructed properly from the get-go so that users can enjoy them for years to come.
Eligibility Requirements:
Ages 16+
Youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older.
Project Difficulty:
This project is considered moderate to difficult. Please check our difficulty rating criteria here for more details.
Access Factors:
Vehicle Access: The last stretch of road to get to the project site turns from paved road to dirt road. Lower clearance and non-4x4 vehicles should be able to traverse the dirt road safely, however, volunteers will need to proceed slowly and expect dips and bumps along the final stretch to the parking area.
Other Notes: Cellphone service is very limited in the area
