Where You’ll Be:
The Hall Ranch Open Space is a large public natural area in the foothills of the mountains with meadows and shrub-covered slopes leading up to pine-forested ridges and Longs Peak to the west. The trail project is on a higher elevation slope in open grassland with nearby stands of pine. The Town of Lyons is a few miles away and boasts scenic parks, opportunities for tubing and kayaking on the St. Vrain Creek, and interesting shops, restaurants, and historic buildings to visit.
What You’ll Do:
This project focuses on repairing and improving the Nighthawk Trail, which is open to hikers and equestrians. Volunteers will help divert water off the trail and address areas with significant erosion and damage. We will continue work completed in 2024 to install timber check steps, fill in heavily cupped sections of the trail, and repair and clean old trail drains to accommodate increased water flow.
Additionally, we will construct a raised turnpike to mitigate standing water and mud on-trail. The turnpike will then be filled with materials that allow water to drain through the walking surface. These efforts will make the trail more durable and enjoyable for users.
Please bring your own lunch for the day!
Why It Matters:
The Nighthawk Trail is heavily used for recreation, but erosion and recurring muddy conditions have led to frequent trail closures. This project is a high priority to reduce trail closures, prevent further resource damage, and ensure the trail remains accessible and sustainable for future use.
