National Trails Day: Trail Construction @ Greenie Mountain

Expired

Description

Where You’ll Be:

Greenie Mountain sits on the western edge of the majestic San Luis Valley. On this weekend project, you'll join volunteers in building a single-track, multi-use trail on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands south of Monte Vista. VOC broke ground on this trail in 2018 and volunteers of all skill levels are welcome to help us continue the effort to expand this trail system. We will be camped at the base of Greenie Mountain, where we will enjoy hot meals from our Crew Chefs, a volunteer appreciation raffle, and a fun and social camp setting.

What You’ll Do:

Join fellow volunteers to help construct a new segment of the Greenie Mountain trail system. This trail is especially popular with mountain bikers, and some sections will include fun, mountain bike features. Depending on the project needs, you may also perform basic maintenance on existing trails.

Tasks will vary and include moving light layers of soil, clearing plants like grasses, yucca, and cacti, and relocating large rocks and boulders to shape the trail. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced trail builder, there’s a role for everyone. Expect a short hike—approximately one mile—to reach the worksite.

  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday, with dinner on Saturday.

  • Bring your own dinner on Friday night and enough snacks for the weekend.

  • Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.

Why It Matters:

Outdoor recreation is an important and growing part of the San Luis Valley’s economy. Your efforts will directly support the development of a sustainable trail system that benefits both residents and visitors. By expanding the Greenie Mountain trail, you’re contributing to a resource that promotes recreation and connection with nature.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ages 16+

For overnight projects, all youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older.

Project Difficulty:

This project is considered moderate. Please check our difficulty rating criteria here for more details.

Physical Considerations:

Work will involve a mix of tasks, from moderate trail construction to heavy rock work with mountain bike feature design. Volunteers should be prepared for a one-mile hike to the worksite.

Access Factors:

  • Vehicle Access:  AWD and high-clearance vehicles are recommended. While trailers have made it in the past, road conditions can change with weather, and a large dip before the campsite could become a washout with enough rain.

  • Other Notes: Tent and vehicle camping are fine. Campsite elevation is approximately 8,300 feet. Portable toilets will be available at camp.
