Where You’ll Be:
Visit this urban garden space located right next to the Stanley Marketplace in Northwest Aurora. The Village Farm at Stanley serves as a working and learning garden to grow culturally significant foods for Village Exchange Center's food pantry. Village Exchange Center is a nonprofit that serves and trains community members of all backgrounds using this 1.5-acre farm space.
What You’ll Do:
The Village Farm has been occupying the same space for about 5 years. However, due to a creek reroute construction project occurring this year, the work you will perform will help them re-establish their urban gardens to continue serving as a productive farm and community space. You will be planting both ornamental and vegetable seedlings, putting in posts for garden beds, and laying down irrigation.
Please bring your own lunch for the day!
Why It Matters:
50% of the food grown here goes to their weekly food pantry at the Village Exchange Center building (about 5 min. from the farm) for food insecure community members. Each growing season, local community members learn horticultural practices through Village Exchange Center's vocational training program. The seedlings you will plant have been advised to be culturally significant to the community that it feeds.
