Where you'll be:
Berrian Mountain Park faces high fire danger due to its dense forest, primarily composed of ponderosa and lodgepole pines. The lodgepoles, aged between 80-100 years, are in poor health, necessitating fuel management to mitigate fire risks.
What you'll do:
Engage in vital fuels management using chainsaws and hand saws in the steep and rocky terrain of Berrian Mountain Park. We're seeking 6-10 certified sawyers for this project, as well as around 20 people to help move the felled trees and construct burn piles (swampers). The burn piles will be ignited later in the season under safe conditions.
Why it's important:
Your efforts align with the local fire mitigation plan and Community Wildfire Protection Plan recommendations. By clearing fuels, VOC volunteers enhance safety in communities surrounding the park, making them more resilient to wildfires. This work also safeguards homes, businesses, schools, infrastructure, and evacuation routes.
Eligibility requirements:
- Ages 18+
Certified sawyers are essential for chainsaw operation. If certified, note it in your registration comments and send your certificate to Ben Kromash at ben@voc.org. All sawyers must hold current first aid and CPR certification to operate a saw. Check our Training Calendar for certification opportunities.
Difficulty:
Accessibility Factors:
Vehicle accessibility:
- 2WD accessible - Volunteers can drive and park near the worksite.
Other things to note:
- Hiking in uneven terrain is required to find suitable working areas with sufficient distance from other sawyers.
