Where you'll be:
Join us at Berthoud Pass, the site of VOC's inaugural project in 1984, as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary with trail restoration. The Second Creek Trail, a popular hiking route in Grand County, offers stunning alpine views and leads to the renowned backcountry Broome Hut, Colorado's highest occupancy backcountry hut.
What you'll do:
Participate in trail restoration and maintenance, addressing issues like closing social trails, constructing timber and rock steps, and installing drainage dips. There's even a possibility of new trail construction pending re-route approval. Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, with dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.
Why it's important:
With approximately 75,000 annual visitors to The Broome Hut and Second Creek Trailhead, the area has suffered damage, erosion, and widening. Preventing social trails and sedimentation is crucial to safeguard the watershed feeding the Colorado River headwaters. Trail improvements also aid in reclaiming damaged high-alpine tundra habitat. The Second Creek Trail serves as a vital connector between Berthoud Pass and the Mt. Nystrom trail, providing access to the Fraser Valley and Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.
Eligibility Requirements:

All youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older on overnight projects.
Accessibility Features:

There is cell service at the trailhead and on the entirety of the trail.Work is at 10,000 ft and higher.
