Where you'll be:
Just 45 minutes from Sedalia, the Devil's Head Trail winds through pine and aspen forests, offering panoramic views of Colorado's Front Range and striking rock formations. The trail leads to the base of Devil's Head Fire Lookout, the last remaining original Front Range fire lookout tower still in use after more than 50 years. It holds historical significance as the host of Colorado's first female lookout in 1919 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Volunteers will get the chance to hike up to the Fire Tower Lookout and learn from Forest Service staff about the lookout experience!
What you'll do:
Join us for the 3rd consecutive year as VOC conducts maintenance on this popular trail. Tasks include removing old, eroded timber steps, installing new ones, maintaining drainage structures, and closing social trails.
Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, along with dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.
Why it's important:
The trail leads to Devil's Head Fire Lookout, a historic tower still in use. By installing new timber steps, volunteers enhance safety for all visitors and staff. This maintenance work prevents erosion, ensuring the trail remains accessible for those who appreciate this historic location.
