Where you’ll be:
Mt. Shavano is a majestic peak located in the Sawatch Range of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Rising to an elevation of 14,229 feet, this landmark is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts and climbers.
What you’ll do:
On this weekend project of up to 40 volunteers, you'll work with our partners at Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) to install timber check steps along the trail to the top of Mt. Shavano. This project is part of a three-phase, six-year project to construct, reconstruct, and restore the trail to the summit to protect the surrounding environment while accommodating the mountain's estimated 10,000 annual visitors.
Your hard work will be rewarded with stunning views and free campsites on Friday and Saturday nights, along with breakfast and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday, provided by volunteer crew chefs. Please bring your own lunch (BYOL).
Please note that we strongly recommend arriving on Friday evening in order to be prepared for Saturday due to the remote nature of this project.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to get coffee and breakfast to-go starting at 6 am and hike at their own pace. CFI staff will be at the work site welcoming volunteers as they arrive. This project involves a long hike to the worksite, and we want to make everyone feel comfortable hiking at their own speed.
Why it’s important
Due to private land holdings, the current route to the summit was user-created and not sustainably planned. CFI's Sustainable Trails Inventory in 2012 gave the trail an "F" rating, noting steep grades, proximity to a creek that floods in the early season, and extensive erosion and trail braiding. After years of negotiating and fundraising, CFI purchased the private parcels of land, and it is critical that work begin as soon as possible to mitigate future damage. You will be part of this effort by breaking ground on a well-planned, safe, and sustainable summit route.
Eligibility Requirements:
- 18+
Project Difficulty:
This project is considered difficult. Check our difficulty rating criteria here for more details.
Accessibility Factors:
Vehicle accessibility: A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the route to the project site (something like a Subaru Outback or Forester will get you up just fine).
Other notes: This project is not for the faint of heart! There is a strenuous hike to the worksite, and volunteers may be lifting large logs in teams of 6-8 to carry them up the trail.
Join us in making a positive impact while reducing your carbon footprint! Register yourself for our upcoming project and take the eco-friendly route by carpooling with fellow volunteers.
