Where you’ll be:
Known by many names, such as the "Switzerland of America" and the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado," Ouray is nestled in the San Juan Mountains in the southwest part of the state.
You'll be working on the Silvershield Trail, which leads to the world’s longest continuous dinosaur trackway (Learn more here).
Volunteers should bring a swimsuit to enjoy the hot springs, with free passes provided by the city! We will camp at Rotary Park, a city park normally closed to camping. For volunteers who want to bring climbing gear, there is great climbing right in the park with bolted routes.
Camping will be available on Sunday night if anyone wants to stay an extra night rather than make a long drive back after the workday.
What you’ll do:
Join us for cool temperatures and even cooler views on this fall project in Ouray. Working in partnership with the City of Ouray, Ouray Trail Group, and the U.S. Forest Service, you'll work with approximately 40 volunteers to perform critical maintenance tasks on the heavily used Silvershield Trail. Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, along with dinner on Saturday.
Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free
campsites are available on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday night – VOC has extended the camping reservation for volunteers so they
can stay Sunday night to allow volunteers to drive home on Monday if desired.
Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.
Why it’s important:
The recent acquisition of land containing the dinosaur footprints by the U.S. Forest Service has drawn more hikers to the Silvershield Trail, underlining the urgent need for maintenance. Your efforts this weekend will play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and longevity of this popular trail.
