Where you'll be:
Join in the forest surrounding Cal-Wood Education Center, nestled in the foothills above Boulder near Jamestown. Cal-Wood is a non-profit dedicated to expanding the diversity of individuals experiencing nature and the Colorado Mountains through its environmental education programs.
What you'll do:
This project, tailored for volunteers aged 18 and above, offers two vital roles: chainsaw-certified volunteers will skillfully cut down dead and dying trees, while "swamper" volunteers will assist in log movement and slash pile construction. Your collective efforts will foster a flourishing forest ecosystem, mitigating threats of disease and wildfires. Cal-Wood proactively manages its expansive 1200-acre classroom by enhancing forest health and bolstering wildfire resilience. Each year, approximately 20 acres undergo forest restoration projects, with around 140 acres awaiting attention in non-burned areas.
Why it's important:
In 2020, half of Cal-Wood's 1200-acre expanse succumbed to the ravages of the Calwood Fire. Now, the focus shifts to fortifying the remaining unscathed acreage for optimal forest health and wildfire resilience. As the forest serves as Cal-Wood's primary educational backdrop, preserving its integrity is paramount while the burn zone recuperates. Your involvement in selective tree harvesting will be instrumental in safeguarding this incredible educational resource.
