Where you'll be:
Join us along the Dolores River, spanning 241 miles from its source in the San Juan National Forest to its confluence with the Colorado River in Utah. This project focuses on a Cottonwood gallery nestled between Gateway and Naturita, where the soothing sounds of the river create a tranquil environment.
What you'll do:
Your work will be focused on protecting cottonwood by installing specialized cages. Specifically, you’ll transport materials, including t-posts and fencing material, to the project sites and secure them around the trees. The goal is to fortify the cottonwoods against beaver predation and preserve the health of this essential riparian habitat. Anecdotal evidence on the Dolores has shown that with recent flooding events beavers have been able to access the trees above previous caging efforts, suggesting the need for updated cages.
Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, along with dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.
Why it's important:
This project plays a vital role in enhancing the riparian corridor of the Dolores River. Cottonwood galleries serve as critical ecosystems, offering shade, regulating water temperatures, and providing essential habitat for fish with large woody debris. By safeguarding these habitats, we contribute to the overall health and resilience of the river ecosystem and its diverse wildlife.
