Where you'll be:
This project will take you to Saguache Park, an enormous and breathtaking intermountain grassland near the Continental Divide and La Garita Mountains. We will be camped near a Stone Cellar Guard station (a historic cabin) where you'll find the solitude and seclusion, you'd expect from a Wilderness experience. With Saguache Creek meandering through the nearby meadow, anglers can enjoy fishing right at their doorstep, while the proximity to Stone Cellar Campground adds to the rustic charm.
What you'll do:
Join us for a rewarding volunteer experience as we work to remove old fencing. With potential projects at three different locations near our campsite, volunteers will assist in dismantling outdated infrastructure, contributing to both recreational enhancements and habitat restoration efforts.
Why it's important:
The removal of old fencing is a priority for the Saguache Ranger District because it will provide both recreation and habitat improvements for the area.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Ages 16+
All youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on overnight projects.
Project Difficulty:
This project is considered moderate please check our difficulty rating criteria, here, for more details.
Accessibility Factors:
Vehicle Accessibility:
The cabin is accessible with 2WD, but there is an hour+ of driving on a dirt road that is a little bumpy.
Other notes:
We will be able to shuttle to the work site with little to no hiking required. Volunteers will have to tent or car camp. The cabin will be for crew chefs. Van camping and small trailers are not an issue.
