2024-Bull Sorcerer Trail Construction @ Del Norte

Expired

Description

Where you'll be:

The BLM’s Stone Quarry Trails area, situated between Monte Vista and Del Norte, offers mountain biking and hiking opportunities at elevations ranging from 7,900 to 8,200 feet. Located just off US Highway 160, the entrance is less than five miles east of Del Norte and ten miles west of Monte Vista, on Gun Club Road.

The area currently features 7.4 miles of purpose-built slick rock and natural surface trails, rated intermediate to difficult. Characterized by large boulder formations, the trails provide a sense of seclusion in a scenic canyon land. The rugged terrain offers technically challenging loops with panoramic views of the Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. The landscape comprises rock formations, dry washes, and occasional meadows, with a variety of vegetation, including prairie grasses, sage, cactus, yucca, rabbitbrush, and pinon and juniper trees.

What you'll do:

Volunteers will construct a new trail segment connecting the Bull Sorcerer and Duran Land trails to create a loop trail. The project will involve building sections with mountain bike features and performing basic maintenance on existing trails. Tasks may include moving soil, clearing vegetation, and relocating rocks and boulders.

Breakfast will be provided on Saturday and Sunday, with dinner on Saturday. Please bring your own lunch. Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.

Why it's important:

Your work will contribute to the development and extension of a sustainable trail system in the San Luis Valley, supporting outdoor recreation and economic growth. Improvements to this popular mountain biking destination are a priority for the BLM, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment for visitors and residents.
