2024-Noxious Weed Removal @ Trickle Mountain

Expired

Description

Where you'll be:

Discover a unique and scenic landscape in southern Colorado defined by mesas and small mountains dissected by short canyons that support a mosaic of woodlands and grasslands. In Colorado, this type of terrain is more typical of lower elevations to the west.

In 2020 the BLM San Luis Valley Field Office added this 24-acre parcel to increase access to public lands in Saguache County, Colorado. This newly acquired property will provide access to BLM’s Trickle Mountain Area which has been identified as being an Area of Critical Environmental Concern, signifying that the area requires special management to protect.

The site also supports populations of two Colorado endemic plants: Weber’s catseye (Cryptantha weberi) and rock-loving aletes (Neoparrya lithophila).

Middle Creek, flowing through the property, offers fishing opportunities.

What you'll do:

Volunteers will remove Black Henbane, a toxic and invasive plant that fiercely competes with native plants for nutrients and moisture. These plants will be mechanically removed with dandelion forks and shovels and bagged to prevent further growth and spread.

Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, along with dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.

Why it's important:

Removing this toxic, invasive plant will enhance the health of native plant communities and wildlife. Your efforts will contribute to maintaining the area free of chemical herbicides.
