2024-Trail Construction @ Greenie Mountain

Expired

Description

Where you'll be:

Greenie Mountain sits on the western edge of the majestic San Luis Valley. On this weekend project, you'll join volunteers in building a single-track, multi-use trail on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands south of Monte Vista. VOC broke ground on this trail in 2018 and volunteers of all skill levels are welcome to help us continue the effort to expand this trail system. We will be camped at the base of Greenie Mountain, where we will enjoy hot meals from our Crew Chefs, a volunteer appreciation raffle, and a fun and social camp setting.

What you'll do:

Volunteers will work to construct a new segment of trail to expand the Greenie Mountain trail system. This trail is a popular mountain biking spot and trail construction will include some sections with fun mountain bike features. Volunteers may also perform basic trail maintenance on the existing trails if necessary. Tasks on all sections will range from moving a thin layer of soil and clearing plants such as grasses, yucca, and cacti, to moving large rocks and boulders.

Enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, along with dinner on Saturday. Bring your own lunch (BYOL). Free campsites are available on Friday and Saturday nights, and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at base camp before 8 pm on Friday.

Why it's important:

Outdoor recreation is a growing economy in the San Luis Valley and your work will play a critical role in establishing and extending a sustainable trail system for visitors and residents alike.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ages 16+

All youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on overnight projects.

Project Difficulty:

This project is considered moderate to difficult, please check our difficulty rating criteria, here, for more details.

Accessibility Factors:

Vehicle Accessibility:

The access road is in between 2WD and 4WD. A high clearance 2wd would be fine but the road is bumpy and has one wash at the end.

Other notes:

We will hike 1.5 miles to the new trail construction work. Tent, van camping and small trailers are not an issue.
