While this project is open to all people regardless of identity, please know that our goal is to create a space for individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community to connect with one another. We are happy to have you even if you do not identify as part of this community; we just ask that you familiarize yourself with these tips to help make this a welcoming space.
Where you'll be:
On Earth Day in 2017, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado conducted their first Grand Milestone event to celebrate their 1,000th outdoor stewardship project which was the construction of the First Creek Trail on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Return to First Creek with VOC to restore an underutilized corner of the refuge while also establishing a walkable, equitable access point for the nearby Montbello and Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods.
What you'll do:
Volunteers will be removing invasive species and restoring native riparian, wetland, and transitional shrub habitat along First Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River, through plantings.
Why it's important:
This project will improve the habitat, wildlife, and recreational experience for those at the Refuge, and will contribute to the mental, physical, and social health benefits for those closest to the Refuge within the Montbello neighborhood who can now more easily access the Refuge. It is also the site of an active Bald Eagles' nest.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Ages 10+
All youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older.
Project Difficulty:
This project is considered easy to moderate, please check our difficulty rating criteria, here, for more details.
Accessibility Factors:
Cell service is spotty but usually available. Volunteers will park at the Visitor Center and park staff will shuttle people to the project site (about a 15-minute drive) since it is off the usual Wildlife Scenic Drive, multiple trips with the van may be necessary for all volunteers.
