Summary: Youth will construct 4,000 feet of crusher fine trail, remove noxious weeds, and plant 20 trees
Description: Spend an autumn day with your family
and friends rehabilitating a World War II
memorial at Denver's Babi Yar Park.
Founded in 1971, the park commemorates
the mass murder of thousands of Jews, gypsies
and Soviet prisoners of war at the Babi
Yar ravine on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukraine,
from 1941 to 1943. The park includes many
symbolic features, including a path in the
shape of the Star of David, descriptive granite
monuments providing an historical perspective
on the atrocity, and a Grove of
Remembrance consisting of 100 linden trees. Having received no maintenance since
its creation, the park and its trail are in
need of repair and restoration. Young
volunteers and families will restore the
Star of David pathway, plant trees in the
grove and remove noxious weeds. This
project provides future community leaders
with the opportunity to take care of
an important historical park while
learning about and honoring those who
suffered and died at Babi Yar.
