Summary: Restoration and maintenance of four miles of trail into two different locations within the park
Description: Just minutes from Fort Collins, Lory State Park is filled with
miles of trails to explore unique rock outcroppings, open fields of
wildflowers, and pine forests filled with songbirds, bears, coyotes
and wild turkeys. Continually exposed to erosive weather and the
wear and tear of feet, wheels, and hooves, these trails require
constant maintenance. Volunteers will stabilize erosive sections
of trail, clear the overgrown portions, and build rock
walls and steps to ensure these trails remain open for future
generations. With the help of 200 volunteers, VOC will repair
two of the most popular trails, including the first project ever
completed by VOC in 1984, the Overlook Trail climbing up to
Arthur's Rock, Lory State Park's most recognizable landmark.
Volunteers will also work on the South Valley Trail, a
3-mile loop at the south end of the park, that offers expansive
views of Horsetooth Reservoir. Lend a hand to make sure
these trails last another 20 years. This project is dedicated to
the memory of Curt Chitwood, a founding VOC volunteer
who loved the challenge of building technical trails on
Colorado's public lands.
