Summary: You will build 1,000 feet of natural surface trail and plant 200 wetland plants
Description: Dig in and get dirty at Littleton's Massey Draw Open
Space, the site of VOC's first family-friendly project of the year.
Set among the grasslands, ponds and cottonwood banks of
Deer Creek, Massey Draw is the primary watershed drainage
that fills the Chatfield Reservoir. Because of increasing development
and changing drainage patterns, the draw experiences
extreme water flow that causes the banks to erode and deposit
disproportionate amounts of phosphorous into the reservoir.
While not considered a human health hazard, too much phosphorous
is extremely damaging to animals living in and
around the reservoir, often resulting in large fish kills and
excessive algae growth. In an effort to maintain the reservoir's
delicate aquatic ecosystem, young volunteers and their families
will plant 200 trees, wetland plants and shrubs along the
draw to prevent further erosion. Volunteers will also build 1/4
mile of new trail to increase recreational access within the
Massey Draw Open Space. Bring your family for a day of fun
and giving back to Colorado.
