Summary: Weeklong project to construct an access trail to the Sangree Hut
Description: Twenty-nine backcountry huts, connected by 350 miles of trail
and the opportunity to ski, mountain bike, or hike from hut to hut
and enjoy a comfortable and warm night of shelter. Managed by the
10th Mountain Division Hut Association, these modest shelters supply
a safe and comfortable sanctuary for backcountry recreationists.
Located just north of Leadville, the Sangree Hut is the newest addition
to Colorado's unparalleled hut system. Unfortunately, the hut's
summer access trail is not complete. Volunteers will spend one
week building portions of the new trail, with the primary work
involving major rock work, a VOC specialty, including rock walls,
steps, switchbacks and drainage structures that will minimize
recreational impacts to surrounding environments. Volunteers
must commit to participating for the entire week and are required
to complete a formal application.
