Summary: Youth volunteers will plant shrubs, plants and grasses in an effort to restore this important native habitat
Description: Greenland Open Space is characterized by rolling grasslands, oak shrublands, and pine forests. The area is home to elk, mule deer, coyote, and black bear and a variety of water birds, small mammals, and various invertebrates. In 2002, VOC volunteers installed erosion control structures, removed damaging weed infestations, and planted native shrubs. As a result of such efforts, Douglas County is pleased to report the return of the native leopard frog to the area. In order to encourage more native birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians to return and flourish, additional re-vegetation efforts are needed to continue to improve the cover and food that is critical to a healthy ecosystem. Join youth volunteers as they plant additional fruit-bearing shrubs, native plants and grasses around the ponds to continue aiding in the property's recovery from years of overgrazing.
