Summary: Help complete construction of the final segment of the Pet-e-Kes Trail, a new hiking and mountain biking trail dedicated to long-time public land steward, Pete Larson.
Description: The snow in March postponed completion of the trail. We'll try again to continue, and hopefully complete, the work begun on National Public Lands Day in September and followed by another work weekend in November. The lower ? mile section of this trail has been completed and opened. We'll work to complete the upper section which will add another three quarters of a mile to this trail honoring the late Pete Larson. Pete was a retired high school science teacher who worked seasonally for both the BLM and the National Park Service. He died in August 2004 in an ATV accident while on the job for the BLM. He was an avid trail runner and mountain biker who often used public lands trails. The new trail will be approximately 1.2 miles in length and is located on BLM land in the "Lunch Loop" area, a popular recreational trail system within two miles of downtown Grand Junction. This was one of Pete's favorite areas to run and bike with his beloved sheepdog "Kes." Pete's family chose the name Pet-e-Kes, a combination of these two friends' names. The area offers outstanding views of the Grand Valley, Grand Mesa and Colorado National Monument. The trail will provide an important addition to the existing trail system. It will offer an intermediate level trail in an area which currently contains mostly advanced level trails. It will provide several new loop trail opportunities.
The upper section should be a little easier trail building than the lower section. Volunteers will be assigned to a crew with a trained crew leader. Each crew will work on an assigned section of trail. We'll meet at the Tabeguache Trailhead on Monument Road starting at 9:00 a.m. REMEMBER DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!
