Summary: Help build Grand Junction's newest and gnarliest mountain bike trail
Description: When completed, this trail in the upper reaches of the Lunch Loop area will offer one of the most technically challenging mountain bike trails in the region, and the first purpose-built freeride/downhill bike trail constructed on BLM public lands. The first phase of this project will create just over a mile of gravity-fed fun for expert mountain bikers. This trail has been designed as a "black diamond" trail with numerous "double black diamond" alternate lines - a step up in difficulty from any of our existing public trails. Starting from the "Eagle's Nest" riders will swoop along fast and flowing singletrack, periodically taking flight on numerous hits and drops. Two designated "play zones" in a rocky drainage will allow freeriders to get creative and test their skills on their line of choice. The pace will slow slightly on the lower half of the route where riders can test their mettle on multiple technical rock moves as the route drops along the lower edge of a rock rim enroute to an awesome overhang and killer views of the Grand Valley and Colorado National Monument.
Before this intense experience can become a reality some intense trail construction and signing will be required. A professional trail construction contractor (Greg Mazu of Singletrack Trails and Bicycle Colorado) will be working on the project, and he is stoked to get the local mountain bike and trail-building community involved in the construction of this unique trail. The kick-off for volunteer efforts on this trail will be a project on September 29, 2007. Additional work days may be planned following that, and individuals or small groups are invited to coordinate with Greg or the BLM to help out as schedules allow. Anyone volunteering on the trail is asked to register for the project so we can accurately track the community contributions of time and energy that will help make this trail a reality.
