Description

Start Date-End Date: 09/22/2007-09/23/2007 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help design and layout a new singletrack trail system near Grand Junction. Description: The Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition Foundation (COHVCO Foundation) and Bicycle Colorado are looking for some help to design and layout 27 miles of singletrack trails. The project is located near Unaweep Canyon in the Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Management Area south of Whitewater, Colorado. This is spectacular country, with salmon colored slick rock cliffs separating dense juniper forests. The trails will be managed by BLM for shared use by motorcyclists and mountain bikers. The plan is to assemble five teams of three to five people. On the first day of the project, each team will flag and GPS a short section of trail. The teams will follow trail management objectives and design criteria. On the second day, teams will switch off and critique each others' work. Each team will include motorcyclists, mountain bikers and GPS technicians. When the flagging is complete, archeology technicians will survey the routes. If cultural issues are encountered, the routes will be relocated accordingly. Later, the design teams and other volunteers will return to construct the single-track trails, and to add signs and infrastructure. Some trail design and/or construction experience is preferred, but not required. If you would like to join in this unique experience, please register for the project. You will then receive an e-mail asking for a brief explanation of why you are interested and qualified to be one of the lucky ones to lay out this really cool trail system.
