Summary: Collect pine seed cones to help reforest the Hayman burn area.
Description: On the morning of June 8, 2002, the Hayman Fire started and quickly became the largest recorded wildfire in Colorado's history. The fire burned nearly 138,000 acres and removed both the tree canopy and the under-story vegetation necessary to stabilize soils. Of utmost importance is the stabilization of the soils in the burn area to reduce erosion and subsequent sedimentation of the South Platte River which is a water source and place for recreation for many Coloradans. In an effort to aid in the reforestation of this critical watershed , VOC's Youth Program is partnering with the United States Forest Service and Denver Water to collect pine cones outside of the burn area. The collection of pine cones will provide the seed necessary to increase production at the USFS nursery and allow for increased tree planting in the Hayman burn area.
