Summary: Reroute the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail as it crosses Cottonwood Pass on a week-long project.
Description: This project is a rock connoisseurs dream. Steps, walls, switchbacks and water bars will be constructed as VOC volunteers spend the week creating a single sustainable route for the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail as it crosses Cottonwood Pass. Heavy recreation has left a spider web of social trails resulting in damage to delicate alpine tundra and severe soil erosion. This project is part of a sixty mile relocation of the CDNST between Mt. Elbert and Monarch Pass. The Cottonwood Pass section features panoramic views of the Collegiate Range and visits from bighorn sheep, deer, and mountain goats. Enjoy a scenic area, hone your technical trail building skills and get the satisfaction of improving a portion of the 3,100 mile trail stretching from Canada to Mexico.
