Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/28/2007-01/00/1900 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help rehabilitate a closed back county road to provide hiker access to Summit County wilderness. Description: The Mahan Lake area near Elliott Ridge is located on the edge of the Eagles Nest Wilderness boundary and offers access to both the wilderness trailhead and the Gore Range Trail. This area offers magnificent scenic views and solitude unparalleled in Summit County. The trail to this area follows an old logging road that has been closed to motorized use for a number of years. However because the closure is not sufficient, illegal motorized use is destroying wetland areas near the lake, causing erosion along the trail, and pushing illegal access roads into the wilderness. The Forest Service is rebuilding and reinforcing the closure. VOC will partner with Friends of Dillon Ranger District to rehabilitate the old road to a single-track trail. Bring your energy (and your fly rod) and help ensure that Mahan Lake and the surrounding wilderness will remain a retreat where visitors will continue to find meaning and significance.
