Summary: Establish a sustainable trail route on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail under Colorado's highest peak.
Description: Thousands of people a year traverse the North Elbert Trail to experience the high alpine grandeur of Colorado's highest peak. This trail, part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, provides access to 14,433 foot Mount Elbert. Reaching Elbert's summit is a challenging hike but rewards the hardy with vistas of neighboring peaks, lakes and forests.
Sections of the existing mixed use trail were poorly designed, if designed at all. The trail is too steep to be sustainable. The result is trail degradation from erosion and heavy use. Surrounding fragile alpine environs are suffering. VOC will partner with members of Colorado's hiking and mountain biking communities on a sorely needed one mile trail reroute on a glaicial moraine. This project offers the opportunity to gain experience building switchbacks, rock walls, and waterbars. Come lend a hand and help preserve one of Colorado's most popular alpine experiences.
